One of my new years resolutions was to watch more series and movies (as a book person).
Have I done it? Kinda.
I have started like two series and dropped them after episode three, promising to come back, but I have watched XO Kitty (I’m feral for Minho) and like two movies since the year began so I call that a win.
Anyway in lieu with my resolution, I started watching this BBC UK show called Boarders . I’m really enjoying it and that is what I’m here to tell y’all about today.
Note, in case you plan to watch it, walk away. I’m spoiling everything.
Boarders is a show about these five black kids from the ends (South London), who are offered a scholarship to this majorly white, private boarding school.
How did I find this show?
Well as the TikTok connoisseur (addict), that I am, I saw this clip of this one fine guy in dreads almost get scammed and I was intrigued. I wanted more.
I saw this last year and looked everywhere (telegram) but I didn’t find the pirated, and it was only on Prime.
Apparently, the pirated only hit telegram this year and by a stroke of luck, I found it (someone sent it to me)
It has two seasons out, each six episodes, and I just finished the first season(y’all don’t know how big of an achievement this is to me I swear).
The show starts with the school in a scandal because some guy and his friends harassed a homeless man and then posted it on the internet. The school calls in five poor black kids and gives them scholarships to clean up their image.
This is where we meet our main characters:
Jaheim: basically a gang boy. Him and his guys jump niggas. He has a younger brother named Caleb, who is the only reason he accepted going into that school. (He is played by Taser from Supercell)
Toby: my man crush, the main reason I picked up this show. A goof, who likes to hustle. Speaks five languages but yet doesn’t take himself too seriously and behaves like he’s slow. (I can’t find his IG, help please)
Leah: the one girl in their crew. A girl for the culture, fights for black rights and inclusivity. Not a chill bone in her body.
Femi: the Nigerian (who speaks the worst Yoruba I’ve ever heard in any show). His parents are the types to threaten with ‘I’ll send you back to Nigeria’ so brother is an overachiever.
Omar: the gay artist (honestly we were introduced to him about to beat it to the bare nipple of a character he drew). He’s a cutie tho.
So they get to the school and immediately Jaheim gets into an issue with Rupert, the ringleader of the harassment of the homeless dude. My issue with Jaheim at first was the boy’s temper (Thank God for character development). Brother doesn’t let a goddamn thing slide. Do him one, he does you five. Doesn’t give a shit that the Rupert’s mother is the chairman of the Board of Directors so the boy has immunity.
Jaheim literally got his boys to jump Rupert one evening(well Rupert and his boys jumped him first and Rupert peed on him so it was deserved imo), then proceeded to accuse them of stealing his roommate’s laptop (newflash it wasn’t them).
But by episode 5, Jaheim just wants to keep his head down. And I think that’s where I really learned to like him. I mean the brother is a closet nerd. Codes, hacks and has action figures.
Leah is roommates with a mixed girl who’s basically acts white (Abbie), and the girl’s dad is the principal of the school. In Leah’s liberal nature, she has an issue with a portrait that depicts the founder of the school and his black slave.
She starts a petition to take down the painting but no one takes her quite seriously cause she gets with this guy that is basically a white boy with black skin (like why tf is your name Koku?) and like every white boy, the bastard did her dirty and always talked about it.
Toby gets stereotyped as a drug dealer from the onset and uses it to gain a reputation. Brother is selling haribo gummies as drugs and all (like I said, he’s a hustler).
He gets with Abbie but after a bunch of one night stands, they become exclusive and break up in the same day cause like I said, brother doesn’t take anything seriously and she wants a serious guy.
Femi rooms with white frat boys who call themselves rah’scals (I swear this is the spelling) and for some reason he doesn’t know how to say no to them. He stops hanging out with the rest of them and only with the white boys and does a lot of questionable shit. Steals essays, streaks naked and to name a few.
Omar on the other hand, my cutie, is just dealing, trying to keep his head down and get into a secret society. Around the time Jaheim and Rupert’s drama ended, the school made Rupert his roommate and despite Rupert making his life a living hell, he was still nice to the boy. Rupert would come back injured and he would actually dress the wound
At some point they were bonding then the stupid Rupert reverted when people found out they were becoming friends. That’s when Omar ditched being nice to Rupert.
The sixth episode was cute though. Jaheim was made headboy and he started to play by the school rules and kinda banned Leah from the school fundraiser. Then when he found out he was just being used, he got revenge and kinda caused the crashing of the fundraiser.
Meanwhile, Leah, tired of playing nice, went to destroy the painting
The five of them actually sat down and had a heart to heart with a big group hug. It was cute. Then Femi ran off with his frat boy guys.
None of them got expelled though, cause Jaheim, the resident tech bro, wiped the CCTV footage. But the Principal was changed. To that rubbish Rupert’s mother. I don’t know what’s going to happen to Abbie, but I’m hoping she keeps her scholarship in the school despite her dad not being there anymore.
I haven’t started the new season though. Waiting for when I have the time to start it.
But I’ll keep y’all posted.
Going to watch it as soon as I get the chance(probably never but still 😭) alsoooo yayyy another Minho lover tho back off. He's mineee🤭😂✋
"Feral for Minho" dfkm😭
