the one about kpop drama
yes you read right. Kpop
Me: Something has been brewing in the kpop sphere for a hot minute.
Readers: But we don’t care about kpop
Me: Unfortunately for you, I care about it, so I’mma gist you anyway (remember the name is gist corner, dw I’ll add pics so you won’t be bored)
Shasha, before I go into this, I’ll need to explain some kpop terms. The way American artists are under labels, is the way kpop groups are under companies. One of such companies is called HYBE.
Now this HYBE has various subsidiary companies (aka companies came together to form HYBE). Bighit is the subsidiary company that handles BTS (everyone knows this one na) while Ador is the subsidiary company that handles New Jeans (yes, that’s a group’s name and they’re the ones that this gist is about)
So New Jeans (shortening this to NJ) that started in August 2022 as five young girls (their oldest was 18, this is important) under Ador, working with Min Heejin as the company chairman. Now these five girls have always said that they love Min Heejin (shortening to MHJ) and keep thanking her in award shows (as per they actually did well the moment they started, they were in a BTS company)
Forward to when the drama actually started, April 2024. So Hybe has a court ordered audit on MHJ for selling shares and conspiring to make Ador an independent company and talking to Hybe investors. Upon getting the audit, we discovered that MHJ got a shaman (yes ooo, juju) on BTS to reduce their popularity and ignited a hate train on ILLIT and Le Sserafim (yes these are group names), two other girl groups under other subsidiary companies in Hybe (got tired of typing in caps). Trust me these two girl groups were hated on for everything they did, got sent death threats that they had to turn off comment sections across all social media.
A whole court thing happened between MHJ and HYBE (I hated how it looked not on caps) where they wanted MHJ to drop as the chairman of the company. I don’t know the details of this. I was struggling with final year project at the time (y’all I almost died).
I ignored all news of the drama but I think HYBE succeeded and got MHJ off being the chairman. Now in the midst of this drama, NJ are just there dropping one song once in a while, kind of in the middle of it all. Everyone on stan twitter feeling pity for the girls (asper their career was like briefly halted). Them coming on livestream to talk about how they were feeling.
On one random day in September, these beautiful girls who are under a seven-year contract, went on a youtube livestream on a page that wasn’t their regular group page, issued an ultimatum to HYBE stating that they wanted MHJ back in as the chairman before the end of the month, or else (they didn’t specify) and then deleted the youtube page. Imagine telling your company you want a vending machine or else, like you have the power to.
Month end reach, they put the MHJ woman as creative director, the girls said they don’t want, they want her as chairman. At this point, stan twitter is torn into two. NJ fans, called tokkis (see leave me with the names, koreans like cute things) are hating on anybody that is against MHJ even though it came out that this woman glamorizes pedophilia (me I don’t know how true this is sha, but evidence seems like it true. its like the way Dan Schneider of Nickelodeon had a foot fetish. the scenes that seemed innocent now feel wrong because you know the intention).
As of 20th of this month MHJ left Ador as a whole, and NJ (who at this point we are wondering if they were groomed by this woman since they were all minors when they probably met her, remember the eldest was 18 when they started and kpop groups train for years before they start), said that they want to leave the company too. If they leave, they’ll have to pay a lot of money since they are terminating a seven year contract (they only fulfilled two years).
Yesterday, NJ went on a press conference, said they were leaving the company, the contract was gone since it was a breach of trust (it wasn’t trust me), they won’t pay anything and they would just have to free the name. And I’m here like, I don’t know law but it can’t be that easy to get out of a contract especially as that termination isn’t mutual. Right? Then HYBE and Ador released a statement saying that the contract isn’t terminated.
Me I’m just wondering if their plan is to just follow that woman wherever she goes like ducklings cause they just used their hands to ruin their careers. And the woman they’re fighting so hard for is not supporting them. Keeps saying she has no hand in it.
I doubt another company will accept them and I doubt they can do self made company because those need a lot of money hence they’re not so popular in Korea.
But wetin concern me. I have my own issues to face. Good luck to them.

Now listen to Cookie (the last song on the playlist), the few english words there, and tell me they’re talking about a flipping cookie (with lyrics like, IF YOU WANT IT, YOU CAN GET IT?? by minors!!!!). I’m telling you MHJ was pulling a Dan Schneider.
